It is common to discover that the most significant draft is not coming from the bottom of the door at all, but from a gap along one of the vertical sides where the door has shifted slightly out of alignment with the frame over time, or from a worn section of existing weatherstripping around the latch side. Identifying the actual source before purchasing materials prevents the common mistake of buying a door sweep to fix a problem that is actually located higher up on the frame.

Choosing the Right Weatherstripping Type for Each Gap

For the vertical sides and top of the door frame, a compressible foam or rubber gasket strip that adheres to the frame and compresses when the door closes against it tends to work well and is straightforward to install without special tools. For the bottom of the door, a door sweep, which attaches to the bottom edge of the door itself rather than the frame, generally provides a more durable seal than an adhesive foam strip in that location, since the bottom of a door experiences more physical wear from foot traffic and floor contact than the sides do.

For gaps specifically around a mail slot, pet door, or other cutout in the door itself, purpose-built seals designed for that specific feature will outperform generic weatherstripping applied around an irregular opening, and are worth the small additional cost rather than attempting to improvise a seal with materials designed for straight edges.

Preparing the Surface Before Installation

A frequently skipped step that significantly affects how long weatherstripping lasts is proper surface preparation before installation. Adhesive-backed weatherstripping needs a clean, dry surface to bond properly, and installing it over an old layer of degraded weatherstripping, dust, or residual adhesive from a previous attempt is one of the most common reasons a new installation fails within weeks rather than lasting for years. Removing all old material completely, cleaning the surface with a mild solvent or rubbing alcohol to remove any residue, and allowing the surface to dry fully before applying new material takes an extra few minutes but meaningfully extends the life of the installation.

Installing With Attention to Compression, Not Just Placement

When installing compressible weatherstripping along the frame, the goal is not simply to place it in the gap but to ensure it compresses appropriately when the door closes, creating a seal without preventing the door from closing and latching properly. Applying the strip while the door is open and then testing the door closure afterward, rather than trying to install it with the door closed, generally produces a more even and better-positioned result. If the door becomes difficult to latch after installation, the weatherstripping is likely too thick for that particular gap, and a thinner profile should be used rather than forcing the door to compress an oversized strip repeatedly, which accelerates wear on both the weatherstripping and the door hardware.

Addressing the Threshold Separately From the Sweep

For exterior doors specifically, the threshold itself, meaning the raised strip at the base of the doorway rather than the door sweep attached to the door, is a separate component that can also be a source of drafts if it has settled, warped, or developed gaps from age. Many thresholds include an adjustable feature, typically small screws that raise or lower the threshold slightly to improve contact with the door sweep. Checking whether an existing threshold has this adjustment feature and making use of it, rather than immediately assuming a full threshold replacement is necessary, is a worthwhile step before undertaking a larger repair.

Testing the Completed Seal

Once installation is complete, it is worth repeating the same draft-detection process used at the start of the project, checking the same points along the frame and door edge to confirm the draft has actually been resolved rather than simply assuming the new materials have solved the problem. This verification step catches situations where a gap was addressed at one point but a secondary gap elsewhere was overlooked, allowing a second, more targeted round of sealing before considering the project finished.
