Refinishing a Wood Door Instead of Replacing It
A wood exterior door showing its age, with a faded, peeling, or cracked finish, does not necessarily need to be replaced, and refinishing is often a more cost-effective and entirely achievable weekend project for someone willing to follow the proper preparation steps carefully. The quality of the final result depends far more on the preparation work than on the specific stain or finish product chosen, which is where many first-time refinishing attempts fall short.
Assessing Whether Refinishing Is the Right Approach
Before starting, it is worth honestly assessing the door's underlying condition, since refinishing addresses surface-level finish deterioration but does not repair structural problems like significant warping, rot, or delamination of veneer layers on some engineered wood door constructions. Pressing firmly on different areas of the door and checking for any soft spots, which can indicate underlying moisture damage or rot, is a reasonable first check. A door with only surface-level finish wear, meaning fading, minor cracking of the existing finish, or graying of exposed wood, is generally an excellent refinishing candidate, while a door with soft spots or significant structural warping may need repair or replacement rather than refinishing alone.
Removing the Door for Proper Access
While it is technically possible to refinish a door while it remains hung in place, removing the door entirely and setting it on sawhorses or a similar stable, flat support provides considerably better access to all edges and surfaces, and allows the door to lie flat during the finish application and drying stages, which produces a more even result than working on a vertically hung door where drips and uneven application are more likely. Chemical stripper, applied according to the product's specific instructions and allowed to fully soften the old finish before scraping, generally provides more thorough removal than sanding alone, particularly for finishes with multiple old layers, though a combination approach using stripper for the bulk removal followed by sanding for final smoothing typically produces the best result.
Sanding Through a Proper Grit Progression
Once the old finish is removed, sanding through a progression of grits, typically starting around 100 or 120 grit to remove any remaining residue and smooth out surface irregularities, then progressing to 150 and finally 220 grit for final smoothing, produces a considerably better surface for finish application than sanding with a single grit throughout. Skipping directly to a fine grit without first addressing rougher surface irregularities with a coarser grit leaves those irregularities present under the new finish, while sanding excessively with only a coarse grit leaves visible scratch marks that telegraph through lighter stain colors. Sanding with the grain direction throughout, rather than across it, avoids visible cross-grain scratches that become particularly noticeable once a stain is applied and highlights any inconsistency in sanding technique.
Addressing Any Repairs Before Finishing
Any minor surface imperfections, small dents, or nail holes from removed hardware should be filled with an appropriate wood filler product before the final sanding pass, allowing the filler to be sanded flush with the surrounding surface rather than remaining visible as a raised or uneven patch under the new finish. For exterior doors specifically, checking that any exposed end grain, particularly at the bottom edge of the door, receives adequate sealing is worth extra attention, since end grain absorbs moisture considerably more readily than the flat grain on the door's main faces, making it a common point where finish failure and subsequent wood damage begins even when the rest of the door's finish remains in good condition.
Applying Stain and Sealant With Adequate Drying Time Between Coats
When applying stain, working in manageable sections and wiping off excess stain according to the product's recommended timing rather than allowing it to dry on the surface produces a more even color result than applying stain and leaving it undisturbed. Once the stain has fully dried according to the product's specified time, which is often longer than it may visually appear to need, applying a protective sealant, typically in multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat, with adequate drying time between each coat, produces a more durable and even final finish than attempting to rush the process with fewer, thicker coats.
Reinstalling and Setting Expectations for Longevity
Once the finish has fully cured, which for many exterior-rated finishes takes longer than the surface-dry time before the door can be safely handled, reinstalling the door and testing that it still swings and latches correctly, since the added thickness of new finish coats can occasionally create minor clearance issues that were not present with the old, thinner and more worn finish.
