Hinges rated for lighter hollow core doors may not be adequately rated for the sustained weight of a solid core door over years of use, and using appropriately rated, heavier-duty hinges when installing a solid core door is an important detail that is sometimes overlooked when a solid core replacement is installed using leftover hardware from a previous hollow core door. Checking hinge weight ratings against the actual door weight, available from the manufacturer's specifications, avoids premature hinge wear or sag that can develop when hardware is under-rated for the door it supports.

Solid core doors carry a meaningfully higher cost than hollow core doors of comparable size and outer finish, reflecting both the material cost difference and the additional weight-related handling costs during manufacturing and shipping. For a full-home renovation involving many interior doors, this cost difference across every door adds up considerably, which is why many buyers choose a mixed approach, selecting solid core doors specifically for rooms where sound privacy and durability matter most, such as bedrooms, home offices, and bathrooms, while using hollow core doors for closets, pantries, and other lower-priority interior openings where the sound and durability benefits of solid core construction provide less practical value relative to their additional cost.
